Can You Hear Your Song?
By Jen Davis - Waterloo ON
Sitting still and having a quiet chai tea. Ahhh. A long breath in and an even longer breath
out. Writing in my journal, looking out the window. All alone in a busy world and grateful
for the peace. Happiness.

And yet to find this moment meant planning, negotiating, begging, organizing, stressing
and rushing. At times I wonder it it's worth it. Challenges.

The longer I sit and sink into my comfy chair I remember why I do it and I confirm that it
is always worth it. Finding balance. And once again, finding my song.

I have spent years thoughtfully searching for my purpose, my meaning in this world.
Writing down powerful words and then scratching them out after my life just doesn't live
up to them. Recently a friend and fellow seeker who is being challenged by life's
transitions shared a truth with me. "I'm not sure that we need to define our life purpose.
It's got to be simpler that all that" she said. And that truth enters my ears, glides smoothly
through my head full of words and settles gracefully in my heart.

The words flow out of my pen into my journal. Maybe we are all born with a song, I write.
We come with the outline of the song's style, rhythm and notes. As we live our life our
song naturally becomes clearer and evolves. For each significant memory a note is
added. Our values, dreams, beliefs, and goals make up the chorus. For each relationship,
job, and adventure that comes and goes a whole verse is written. At times our song
speeds up to keep pace with our life. In the dark times our song plays softly in the
background. But always it plays.

So our purpose is not to spend our life trying to write our song, or even share our song.
That is nature's gift to us. What if it is truly as simple as this; can you hear your song?
Every day through the happiness and the challenges. Especially through the challenges.
If it's too loud in your life how can you quiet the noise to hear your song? When life seems
to be so vacant, like a dead lake whose abundant life has been poisoned by chemicals, can
you trust that it is there below the surface just waiting for you to find the energy to
nurture it?

Part of hearing your song means spending the time and energy to learn your song so you
can always recognize it. And part of hearing your song means listening to it with an open
heart that accepts the notes as they are playing.

I knew a great man who for years wanted to change the world with his message. He
worked so hard to convince the world that his song was a worthy one. Towards the end of
his life, he spent almost all of his time listening inwardly to his song, trying to make sense
of it and to embrace it. He shared this inner journey with his loved ones and we heard his
song and we were changed. We had been listening to his music all along and had grown to
love its sweet melody.

Sharing your song can happen in unusual and unexpected ways. But when we try to force
our song on others they may not be at a point where they can hear it. Or it becomes
distorted and it's beauty and uniqueness falls on unappreciative ears. In fact, finding
someone who can hear the true magic in your song is a good prescription for love and
friendship.

And so I share with you my learnings for hearing your song. Spend time listening to your
notes - you don't have to memorize them, they are already there. Allow your song to
unfold as if you were sitting in an audience hearing it play. Accept and enjoy the feelings
that your song evokes in you, for it is your truth. Sing your song loud and proud when the
world needs to hear your song, and hum it quietly to yourself when you need to hear the
song of the world. And drink plenty of chai tea sitting in a comfy chair, peacefully
watching the rest of the world sing their song.
